Our CommunityThe City By The Sea!
Burnie is a regional city historically known for its busy container port and major industries, Burnie was settled in 1827 (before Melbourne) as Emu Bay. Burnie’s early heritage was dominated by the towering rain forests that cloaked the land and more than a century later, by the pulp and paper mill that helped shape the city.
Today Burnie is known as the City of Makers; our wonderful city has undergone enormous changes and now shines brightly as a tourism destination. The Makers Workshop, Rhododendron Gardens, Whisky Distillery and our beautiful waterfront, just a short stroll from the city centre are just a few of the wonderful things you will experience!
Burnie SHINES in October! Burnie is the proud host of Australia’s premier 10K road race, The Burnie 10. For the littlies the 3-2-1 GO! The Burnie Show and many other performances and exhibitions are held during the month. The vibe in the city during October is something you need to experience!
Our amazing waterfront comes into its own on New Year’s Eve with street performers, singers, dancers, rides for the kids and an amazing bonfire and fireworks display – the community rolls out in force to bring in the New Year together. On New Year’s Day the crowds rally again to enjoy the New Year’s Day carnival and the many running, cycling and wood chopping events.
